What Is A Doppler Test?

Published: 14th January 2026

When it comes to medical examinations, practitioners always want their patients to be as calm, comfortable, and relaxed as possible.

One of the best ways to achieve this is to use external, non-invasive exams wherever possible. Tools such as blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes, and otoscopes are effective ways to perform a medical examination while minimising intrusion and discomfort.

Another effective tool for conducting patient exams is a Doppler ultrasound.

In this article, we will examine what a Doppler is, how it is used, the types available, how patients can prepare for a Doppler ultrasound, and the risks associated with the exam.

What Is A Doppler?

A Doppler, also known as a medical Doppler or a Doppler ultrasound, is a medical tool used to measure the speed and direction of blood flow.

It achieves this by using ultrasound to measure blood flow, enabling doctors and clinicians to detect blockages, clots, and deep vein thrombosis.

What Is A Doppler Used For?

A medical expert who reads and interprets ultrasound images is called a sonographer. Using a Doppler, a sonographer can assess blood flow in any part of the body.

Sonographers commonly use Dopplers for:

  • Checking the rate of blood flow to limbs
  • Checking the blood flow to organs
  • Identifying any circulatory problems
  • Monitoring pregnancy

Dopplers are used to diagnose a range of medical conditions, including:

  • Blood clots
  • Poorly functioning valves in your circulatory system, which can cause blood or other fluids to pool in your legs
  • Heart valve defects and congenital heart disease
  • Blocked arteries
  • Reduced circulation in a patient’s legs, called peripheral artery disease
  • Weakened arteries
  • Narrowing of an artery in the neck, called carotid artery stenosis

How Does A Doppler Work?

When a sonographer performs a Doppler ultrasound, they begin by applying a small amount of ultrasound gel to the area to be examined.

The Doppler probe will then be held against the area, allowing the sonographer to interpret what is happening under the skin.

The medical Doppler transmits sound waves into the area of the body being examined. The waves bounce off moving blood vessels and return to the Doppler probe.

The probe then interprets the difference between the start and end of the ultrasound wave and infers blood flow through the body. The sonographer can then use this data to diagnose medical issues or perform a checkup.

What Types Of Doppler Tests Are Available?

The different types of Doppler ultrasounds include:

  • Colour Doppler: Where the ultrasound waves are represented as different colours to show the direction of blood flow.
  • Spectral Doppler: This provides a graphical representation of blood flow over time.
  • Duplex ultrasound: Duplex ultrasound combines traditional ultrasound images with Doppler imaging to assess blood vessel diameter and identify blockages.
  • Power Doppler: This test detects blood flow and can reveal very slow flow. Sonographers may use power Doppler to study blood flow inside organs.
  • Transcranial Doppler ultrasound: A transcranial Doppler ultrasound examines blood flow in your brain to detect strokes or other structural issues.

How Can A Patient Prepare For A Doppler Test?

To prepare for a Doppler test, there are a few steps that patients can take to make sure that results are recorded clearly and accurately:

  • Fasting: When a patient undergoes a Doppler ultrasound, they are often asked to avoid eating for several hours beforehand to obtain the clearest possible results.
  • Avoid nicotine: Nicotine affects blood vessel dilation and constriction, so it is critical to avoid nicotine for at least two hours before the Doppler ultrasound.

Are There Any Risks When Receiving A Doppler Ultrasound?

Because a Doppler test is a purely external, non-invasive ultrasound test, it is highly safe and suitable for use in high-risk patients, such as pregnant women.

A Doppler test does not require any additional equipment, such as contrast dyes used in angiograms or radiation in X-ray machines.
