Tympanic, Non-Contact And Contact Thermometers For Clinical Use
Medical thermometers in this range broadly fall into three groups, and the practical differences between them matter more at the point of purchase than the specifications do.
Tympanic (ear) thermometers take a reading from the ear canal in a few seconds and are widely used across clinical environments. Non-contact infrared thermometers take a reading without touching the patient, removing the cleaning step between patients and suiting reception and screening points where throughput matters. Options include the Accoson AC500, Riester’s ri-thermo sensioPRO+ with or without Bluetooth, and touchless screening devices.
Contact probe thermometers are chosen when an oral, axillary, or rectal measurement is needed, and a fixed device in a treatment room is more practical than a handheld one. The Welch Allyn SureTemp Plus 692 is available wall-mounted with an alarm and either a 4ft or 9ft oral probe, or with a rectal probe, and oral, axillary and rectal probes can be ordered separately as replacements. Which type of thermometer is best for a GP surgery?
Most surgeries use a tympanic thermometer for general consultations, because readings take seconds and the device moves easily between rooms. Non-contact models suit reception or screening points where minimising contact matters, and a wall-mounted contact probe unit is often preferred in treatment rooms where the device stays in one place. Many practices hold more than one type.
Do I need probe covers, and are they interchangeable?
Tympanic and contact probe thermometers use a fresh disposable cover for each patient as part of infection control. Covers are generally specific to the device they were designed for, so Genius, Riester, Omron, MSR and Radiant covers are not interchangeable. Confirm which cover a device takes before ordering, particularly when standardising across several sites.
Can medical thermometers be calibrated or tested?
Some can. The Welch Allyn 9600 calibration tester supports the SureTemp range, and a dedicated calibration kit is available for ri-thermo thermometers. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your equipment management procedures for testing intervals.
What is the difference between Bluetooth and non-Bluetooth models?
Riester’s ri-thermo tymPRO+ and sensioPRO+ are both offered in Bluetooth and non-Bluetooth versions. The Bluetooth models allow readings to be transferred wirelessly rather than read off the device and written down. Where readings are recorded by hand anyway, the non-Bluetooth version does the same clinical job.
