Medical Cabinets
Medicines, consumables, and records all need a proper home, and in a clinical setting that means medical storage that is organised, lockable where needed, and easy to keep clean. The right medical cabinet makes stock quicker to find and check, and keeps diagnostic tools, medical equipment, and medical consumables, medicines, and hazardous substances secured away from patients and visitors. Our medical cabinet range includes controlled drug cabinets and other medicine cabinets, patient medication cupboards, COSHH and hazardous substance cabinets, first aid and key cabinets, and modular storage for treatment rooms, from Sunflower Medical and Shuttleworth Medical.

Which Medical Cabinet Do You Need?
Most buyers start with what needs storing, because that decides the level of security, the lock type and where the cabinet goes.
- Drug cabinets: controlled drug cabinets, including Sunflower cabinets with separate doors and locks, and outer cabinets supplied with an inner controlled drug cabinet. Shuttleworth also supplies inner controlled drug cabinets with Euro locks.
- Patient medication cupboards: wall-mounted Shuttleworth patient drug cabinets with digital or cam locks, and Sunflower self-administration wall cabinets with rack brackets, for residents and patients who manage their own medicines.
- Medical storage cabinets: Sunflower modular storage for treatment rooms, including base, wall, corner, sink and drawerline cabinets, tambour units and drawer units.
- COSHH cabinets: hazardous substance cabinets for cleaning chemicals and other substances that need to be stored separately.
- First aid cabinets and key cabinets for staff areas and reception.
- Filing cabinets and repeat prescription boxes for administrative areas.
If you are storing controlled drugs, the Misuse of Drugs (Safe Custody) Regulations 1973 set out requirements for how certain controlled drugs must be stored. Confirm that a cabinet meets the requirements for your setting before ordering, and our team can help check product specifications.
Medicines that need refrigeration belong in a pharmacy fridge rather than a cabinet, and medication trolleys cover medicine rounds on wards and in care homes.

FAQs
What types of medical cabinet are there?
Whether you call it a medical cabinet, a med cabinet or a medication cupboard, most clinical storage falls into a few groups: drug cabinets for controlled and general medicines, patient medication cabinets for self-administration, hazardous substance (COSHH) cabinets, first aid and key cabinets, and general medical storage cabinets for consumables and equipment.
What is a controlled drug cabinet?
A controlled drug cabinet is a lockable cabinet designed for storing controlled drugs separately from other medicines. In the UK, the Misuse of Drugs (Safe Custody) Regulations 1973 set requirements for storing certain controlled drugs, so it is important to check that a cabinet meets the requirements for your setting. Some cabinets in our range combine an outer cabinet with a separately locked inner controlled drug cabinet.
What is a COSHH cabinet?
A COSHH cabinet stores hazardous substances, such as cleaning chemicals, separately from other supplies. The name comes from the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, which require employers to control exposure to hazardous substances. We list our hazardous substance cabinets under COSHH cabinets.
Can patients or residents store their own medication?
Where a care home or ward allows patients to self-administer, lockable patient medication cabinets are often fitted in their rooms. Our range includes wall-mounted patient drug cabinets with digital or cam locks, and self-administration cabinets with rack brackets. Decisions about self-administration should follow your organisation’s medicines policy.
Can NHS services order medical cabinets from HCE?
Yes. HCE supplies medical cabinets to NHS hospital pharmacies, ward teams, GP surgeries, community hospitals and estates teams.
