Scales & Height Measures
Accurate weight and height measurement is a routine part of clinical observations across many healthcare settings, from hospital wards and GP surgery appointments through to midwifery clinics, paediatric assessments, weight management services, dietetic clinics and community nursing. The appropriate medical scale and height measurements depend on the patient population and the setting.
Our scales and height measures at HCE cover floor scales, chair scales, baby and infant scales, hoist scales, bariatric scales, portable scales, and stadiometers, with brands including Seca and Marsden Weighing. Weighing And Height Measurement For Every Clinical Setting
A clinical scale needs to do its job reliably and consistently, whether that’s weighing a newborn baby in maternity, a chair-bound patient on a ward, an adult patient in a GP surgery, or a patient where a higher-capacity or specialist scale may be required. Stadiometers and height rods sit alongside the weighing equipment, supporting accurate height measurements that feed into BMI calculations and growth tracking. Together they form the basis of routine observations across primary and secondary care.
Our medical scales range at HCE is led by Seca, a German manufacturer that’s the longest-established and most widely stocked clinical scales brand in our range, with around 160 products covering essentially every clinical weighing and height measurement need – alongside Marsden Weighing and a small number of products from A&D Instruments, HEINE and Merlin Medical.
Our range includes:
- Seca Scales & Height Measures: The largest selection in the range, with around 160 products covering floor scales, column scales, chair scales, baby and infant scales, hoist scales, bariatric scales, portable scales, stadiometers and height rods. Seca’s range is widely used across NHS trusts, GP surgeries and community healthcare services.
- Marsden Scales: Medical and clinical scales from Marsden Weighing, a UK-based manufacturer with a long-standing presence in healthcare weighing equipment.
- Qardio Medical Scale: Connected medical scales from Qardio for clinical and remote-monitoring use.
The range covers the full breadth of clinical weighing needs:
- Floor scales for general adult weighing in GP surgeries, clinics and ward settings.
- Column scales and physician scales with integrated height rods for combined weight-and-height measurement.
- Chair scales for patients who can’t stand independently.
- Hoist scales for patients who need to be weighed using a patient hoist.
- Bariatric scales with higher weight capacities and reinforced platforms for higher-weight users.
- Baby and infant scales for maternity, paediatric and health visiting services.
- Portable scales for community nursing, home visits and outreach settings.
- Stadiometers and height measures for standalone height measurement and growth tracking.
Related choices often ordered alongside scales include the wider nursing home and daily living aids range (which includes platform scales), blood pressure monitors and patient self-service health monitors – all of which sit alongside weight measurement in routine clinical observations.

FAQs
What’s the difference between a medical scale and a domestic scale?
Medical scales are built for clinical use, with the accuracy standards, weight capacities, calibration features and durability needed for repeated daily use across many patients. Selected models within the range are Class III approved, which is the relevant non-automatic weighing instrument approval for clinical weighing used in medical assessment, treatment and prescribing decisions. Domestic bathroom scales aren’t built to those standards and aren’t suitable for clinical weighing. Where weight is used in clinical decision-making, the specific product’s approval status should be checked before purchase.
Which medical scale brands does HCE supply?
Our medical scales range is led by Seca, covering the full breadth of clinical weighing and height measurement. The range also includes Marsden Weighing, Qardio, A&D Instruments, HEINE and Merlin Medical.
What type of scale do I need for a GP surgery?
Most GP surgeries use either a column scale with an integrated height rod for combined weight-and-height measurement, or a floor scale paired with a separate stadiometer. The right choice depends on the layout of the consultation rooms, the patient population, and whether height needs to be measured in the same workflow as weight.
Can NHS trusts and surgeries order medical scales from HCE?
They can indeed. Medical scales are often ordered by NHS hospital trusts, GP surgeries, midwifery and health visiting services, paediatric clinics and community health teams. NHS purchase orders are accepted, and eligible customers can apply for a 30-day account. Check our official NHS orders page for more information.
